Stay safe and loon aware

July Fourth is the busiest holiday on Big Mantrap Lake. It’s also one of the most dangerous times for our loon chicks. Stay safe and watch for loons while boating. Chicks can’t dive and boat strikes are the most common cause of death for our beloved babie

Please also remind guests to watch out for loon families, especially chicks, and give loons lots of room.

There’s likely to be lots more traffic on the lake – from boats to paddle boards and kayaks. Be kind to each other and mind your wake. If operating a wake boat, please review this custom map showing recommended locations for operating boats that produce enhanced wake.

Remember that as of July 1, anyone 16 and younger (born before June 30, 2000) is required to have a watercraft operator’s permit to drive a motorboat or personal watercraft, according to Minnesota law. The Minnesota DNR’s boat safety website offers other safety tips.
